Critical Role Campaign 4 Unveils the Soldiers Group

From the very beginning of the fourth campaign, recently appointed game master Brennan Lee Mulligan has maintained audience suspense with rich lore, a wide array of characters, and a gripping narrative featuring divine entities, demons, and dark forces growing in influence within the urban setting.

Heads-up: Spoilers for the third episode of this adventure lie ahead.

The Soldiers Table Introduced

The latest chapter finished on a dramatic pause and revealed the first table of adventurers who will separate from the primary party to begin their own adventure, apart from the other two tables.

The combat-focused team consists of Teor Pridesire (portrayed by Travis), the nimble rogue (the talented performer), the strong-willed figure (Whitney), Wicander Halovar (Sam Riegel), and Kattigan Vale (Robbie).

Why Split the Party?

With 13 cast members, it was evident from the beginning that keeping everyone at one table would be impossible.

This explains, the opening chapters of Campaign 4 serve as an Overture, weaving together the individual narratives before dividing into three smaller tables: Fighters, Strategists, and Seekers.

The Nature of the Soldiers Table

According to the DM, the warrior group is for adventurers who are drawn to a traditionally charged fight-heavy gameplay experience where non-violent answers are few and far between.

Upon first impression, characters like the hesitant healer Wicander might look unsuited, but the actions of episode 3 show why these five characters are best suited for the warrior group.

Motivations for Departure

For one thing, the party understands precisely where to proceed after a brutal first encounter with the antagonists.

Casimir of the deceased character—whose passing kicked off the narrative’s action—used the foes for his own means, invading Thjazi’s hideout, attacking Thimble, and stealing all the enchanted items to sell off.

Casimir then paid off his liabilities and ran away to a fortified location in the remote area, above Dol-Makjar, with Teor’s brother close behind.

Individual Reasons

Moreover, each character has a individual motive to exit Dol-Makjar:

  • The agile hero, as the companion and best friend, desires revenge.
  • The knowledgeable figure is familiar with the northern area and advises that it is a dangerous location.
  • Tyranny and The cleric, having resisted his family’s wishes to execute Teor and instead freed him, have no safe haven.
  • However, their status as important members in the powerful family could help the party enter areas they normally couldn’t.
  • Moreover, The grateful character pledged a life debt to The cleric for his salvation and will now go with him everywhere.

Wanted and Hunted

Lastly, all of them are hunted by the powers that control the city for a multiple motives, making lingering locally no longer safe:

  • Thimble and The character are known criminals.
  • The warrior and The cleric defied House Halovar and the horde of evil beings they are allied with.
  • Teor is targeted for elimination by the clan.

This leaves them no alternative but to travel to the remote area in quest for the antagonist.

What’s Next?

From the latest episode’s post-show segment, we find out that the Soldiers table will be absent in the upcoming installment, leaving the rest of the cast members to round up the Seekers and Schemers groups.

Audiences can anticipate learning which characters will be where in the season’s last Overture episode, available to watch on the upcoming Thursday.
