Individuals Discontinuing Weight-Loss Medications Put On Weight Four Times Faster Compared to Dieters

Obesity treatment involves long-term strategies.

A recent study indicates that people who discontinue blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop conventional lifestyle plans.

Published data in a major medical journal demonstrates that while overweight people often shed about a fifth of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the mass comes back at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.

"Users buying such treatments must be informed of the risk of fast weight regain when the medication ends," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of recovery means a reversion to pre-treatment weight within about one and a half years.

Weighing Approaches

The research, which reviewed 37 of trials involving thousands of participants, compared the effects of the injectable medications with older methods.

Scientists emphasize that people who lose weight through dieting generally experience a slower creep back—around 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.

Explaining the Rapid Regain

Experts suggest the mechanism of the drugs explains the amplified rebound.

These medications imitate a natural hormone called GLP-1, which helps regulate appetite.

"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 levels several times higher than the body's typical production may cause the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and could diminish responsiveness to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.

"Stopping of this medication leads to hunger is uncontrolled, making overeating a significant risk."

A Chronic Issue?

The NHS advise the injections for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

Professionals contend that, given the high risk of weight regain, the treatment should be considered ongoing.

This perspective is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who note that the results "highlight the chronic character of obesity," akin to managing conditions like hypertension.

Patient Testimonies

People who have stopped the medication explain a powerful return of cravings.

"I experienced a trigger activating and I was suddenly extremely hungry," said a patient.

This difficulty is worsened if patients have not adopted sustainable dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.

Widespread Adoption

Figures indicate that a significant number of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with desire remaining high.

  • Use is higher among females compared to men.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the greatest level of interest.
  • Many access the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

Finally, experts stress that while the jabs are effective agents for weight loss, they are not a permanent cure and lasting health benefits relies on ongoing lifestyle support.
