During an inauguration day in the mayor's office, Zohran Mamdani pledged to “reimagine” America's largest city, declaring “a different age” and an bold start to his term.

A Historic Figure

The young democratic socialist, who was a virtually unknown state assemblyman, has become the city's first Muslim mayor. He also made history by being the first to be take the oath of office using the Islamic holy text.

Traditionally, New York mayors are evaluated by their success in providing basic services: trash collection, reducing the rat infestation, fixing potholes, and ensuring reliable subway operation.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams highlighted his administration's public safety record, citing record low numbers of homicides and gun violence in 2025, with 301 homicides reported.

As his work starts, Mamdani and his wife will move from their Astoria apartment to the stately mayoral residence. The outgoing mayor offered a quirky piece of advice about a reputed resident spirit in the home, which reportedly only troubles those who fail to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani ended his remarks with a direct statement: “The work has only just begun.”
